Our History

The British Bulldog pub itself is steeped in history, offering a cozy and welcoming environment that only a century-old establishment can provide. Originally built as a cottage in 1885, it evolved into a tavern in 1904, hosting boxing matches under the name Punch Bowl

Over the years, the building became a cherished neighborhood bar, earning its current name, The British Bulldog, in 2006. With its rich history, intimate ambiance, and authentic charm, the Bulldog has solidified its place as one of Denver’s best-loved gathering spots, bridging the past with a vibrant present.

The booths also hold a unique piece of history. In the 1930s, Noel “Chief Sundown” Adams, a local artist and storyteller, painted the booth backs as payment for food and drink. According to saloonkeeper, Carl Greer, “…he used a 4-inch brush, painting a whole spruce tree with one slash. He painted for drinks, and the more he drank, the better he painted.” Clearly inspired by his surroundings, and fueled by liquid courage, the murals of the Mount of the Holy Cross and Pikes Peak (whilst a little wobbly and shaky in places) are sharp enough to be recognised as some of Colorado’s iconic scenes. His work remains a part of the pub’s charm today, blending artistry and history into the fabric of this intimate, welcoming space. Be sure to pay attention to it the next time you visit.

2052 Stout Street is built between 1885 and 1890 as a small brick cottage.

The Punch Bowl Tavern was established and became Denver’s go-to spot for prize boxing matches.

Licenced in 1904, 2052 Stout Street is home to Denver’s fifth-oldest liquor license.

Native American artist Chief Sundown paints the booths in exchange for food and drink.

New owner Aamer Arboleda renamed the bar the British Bulldog and introduced an English and Pakistani menu with manager Isaac James.

New owners purchased the Bulldog to preserve and celebrate this beloved neighborhood bar, where soccer fans, locals, and food lovers unite.

Over the years, the building became a cherished neighborhood bar. From being the Punch Bowl Tavern in the early 1900’s, to the Stout Street Pub – our building has held different names. Until in 2006, when it was purchased by Isaac James and given its current name: The British Bulldog. Our pub was reborn again in 2008 when we took over and has solidified its place as one of our community’s best-loved gathering spots ever since, bridging the past with a vibrant present.

Being one of Denver’s oldest and most beloved pubs, British Bulldog honors their history by fostering community and connection at every turn. Whether customers are flooding in for an early match, craving a hearty lunch or staying for a late-night pint, British Bulldog wholeheartedly believes in being your home away from home.
